Kahukuranui was the eldest child of Kahungunu and his fourth wife, Rongomaiwahine. He was born at Nukutaurua at Mahia and he was the only child reared in the nursing home. Kahukura married Ruatapu-wahine, daughter of Ruapani, and born to them were Rongomaitara and Rakaihikuroa. This chief was just like his father, handsome in body, and the liking for beautiful women as well. He pursued a very beautiful widow from Porangahau Tuteihonga. Born to them were Hinemanuhiri and Rakaipaka, the latter being the name of the sub-tribe of Nuhaka.
